Don't do it! (Beauty products to avoid)

Hello, lovlies!

Among beauty gurus who snatch up every new product as soon as it comes out there are those sad moments when something that promises everything just doesn't work.  There are many possible reasons for this which can vary from person to person depending on their skin type, coloring and so forth.  I will be sharing with you products that I will definitely not ever be repurchasing again and my reasons why.

As you all know I love a dark lip.  My favorite color of lip color to purchase is purple and oxblood shades.  I am already a fan of L'oreal Paris' Colour Riche liquid lipsticks so when I saw these glosses/ stains I jumped at the opportunity to try them.

Unfortunately, they failed to impress.  The shade in the middle is actually by Black Radiance and is being used for contrast.  Both colors on the sides are shade 163 Plum Rush, the darkest one available.  I bought both because they look different and apply different as well.  This product failed to deliver color, was a pain to apply and simply made my lips look goopy.  Not attractive.  Black Radiance, if you can find it has much better options for pigmented gloss.

The next product is not completely offensive, though will not be reappearing in my makeup bag any time soon.  I am addicted to hi-lighting and thought that this golden shimmer from Icing by Claire's would be a fantastic addiction to my shine collection.

The answer was no it wasn't and if it didn't work so well as as an eye shadow, would be chucked in the trash.  Plus, I paid money for it and hate wasting product.  The swatch you see above took five applications to achieve and this was with my finger.  It looks alright there, however, don't expect it to stick to a brush.  It has maximum fall and just doesn't blend well at all.  You're better off trying to touch it up with your fingers which is a hassle.  In the end I get frustrated and use something else.

Above was the first BB cream that I purchased when the craze first hit and I was so excited to see my skin magically transformed into...

...Snooky from Jersey Shore?  No!  I wanted light coverage that actually matched my skin tone.  And last time I checked I wasn't orange.  This shade is the lightest L'oreal has available and looks awful and fair skinned complexions.  It makes me look like I have a really bad fake spray tan.  Plus the consistency is much more liquid like which is something I'd sooner expect from a CC cream.

I enjoy many of Almay's products.  Their glosses are gorgeous and they have great foundation options, plus I SWEAR by their primers.  If you can't get Smashbox, get Almay.  So I decided to try this Smart Shade skin balancing makeup.

My disappointment with this product has much less to do with the color and more the manner in which it applies, which is terribly.  The consistency is like runny soup and the only thing it doesn't do is balance my face.  I usually end up looking streaky and ten times worse then before I put the makeup on.
However, this is certainly up for debate because I have a close friend whose makeup I do somewhat regularly and on him it's perfect.  So, I suppose giving it a try wouldn't kill you.

I am someone blessed with glorious dark purple bags under my eyes which appear whenever I'm stressed, sick, have allergies or didn't get enough sleep, so I am always looking for ways to clear those pesky rudders away.  So came the Covergirl Trublend Fixstick.

Which fixed nothing.  Although the color is wonderful and it gives great coverage, you have to suffer through looking ten years older because this product loves to nestle into your wrinkles and make them appear painfully obvious.  Your eyes become awake, but considerably older than they were before.  And trying to set it with powder just makes it worse.  There is no soft finish, just old skin.

As a true makeup junkie I love new products.  Trying something new makes me happy.  So when Almay introduced their softies eye shadows I had to give at least one (or five) a try,

I swatched this shade nearly six times to get at least a small amount of pigmentation.  The colors are deceptive, don't go on nearly as dark as advertised and plus because they are 'plush', expect to have trouble using a brush.  The product has so much give that you can hardly pick any of it up.  And I understand that Almay is a much more understated brand and we shouldn't expect hot pink from them, but the color should at least be true to what you see.  All you're gonna get is a tiny bit of shimmer.

I have made sure to save the best for last.  As we discussed earlier, my favorite kind of lipstick is purple.  So when I started going to Sephora and spotted Makeup Forever's shade number 15 I almost fainted.  Purple, glitter, cyber metallic awesomeness.  It had to be mine.

And I wasted twenty dollars.  This was such a disappointment that it still makes me mad sometimes.  Although it swatched beautifully, as seen above I was stupid and didn't try it on my lips in the store.  I went home, applied it once, twice, three times and finally a fourth, realizing that I was never going to achieve that glorious purple shade on my lips.  No matter how many times I applied, it wouldn't transfer.
That sent it to the back of my lipstick drawer for awhile where I let it take a moment to ponder on it's actions.  Recently I took it out again and tried once more.  Didn't make it better.  The color does not transfer, plus it only lasts for ah hour tops and becomes visibly flaky even before that.  It turns your lips to near purple sandpaper.  I've taken to simply applying this as a base then patting eye shadow over it in the color I really want.  So, so disappointed.

So, that is all for now.  Stay tuned for my what I got for Christmas blog, December favorites and a look book!

Stay true to you! <3 <3 <3

The Struggle is Real (The new normal and average)

Hello Lovlies!

One of my favorite things to do each month is receive my Glamour, Seventeen, Instyle, People Style Watch and Nylon magazines in the mail and enjoying a cup of hot tea while I flip through the latest fashions.  I adore the photo shoots which help give me inspiration for my own modeling and love to see what styles are hot for the upcoming seasons.

Nylon Magazine in 2004
I also appreciate the artistic insight that I receive by reading about actresses, makeup artists and models who help give an insider look into an exclusive life which I use to help me in my own modeling, writing, photography and makeup skills.  Plus, it is especially interesting to read about artists whom you like or feel a connection to, such as Avril Lavigne whom I've loved ever since her very first album and am still going strong in the woman crush territory.

However, there is a current movement that I have not been in favor of ever since it started.  And that is the fast growing idea that super models such as Cara Delevigne and Karlie Kloss are just as human as the rest of us.  This popular attitude has made being a normal, average girl even harder than ever, because if a model is what people consider normal then where are we?  Pretty much thrown in the gutter as unattractive leftovers who aren't worthy of being considered beautiful.

At first I was pretty much resigned to this idea since hating on people takes too much energy and I'd rather focus on the positive things in my life and work hard on being myself rather than trying to conform to society's idiotic ideals.  In fact, that was part of the reason I started this blog; so that I could work hard on loving myself and helping other people do the same.  We are all beautiful and deserve being recognized as such, no matter our size, race, shape or height.

Behold; the new normal and average!

However, society is trying its hardest to make us believe that in order to accepted as anything worth having we must embrace the 'Thigh Gap' (Stay tuned for another disgust fueled blog), achieve washboard abs, be over six feet tall(in the legs alone) and apparently as seen above have clearly visible ribs as well.  In other words, let's embrace anorexia and call it normal because all the famous girls are doing it.

In my most recent issue of InStyle there was an interview with famed Victoria's Secret model Karlie Kloss who discussed her intimate relationship with recently deceased designer Oscar de la Renta.  It was touching to hear about his passion for what he did and how wonderfully he treated those who worked with him.  But something in particular stuck out out to me and made me internally moan.  Kloss stated that every time before she walked for Oscar he would take her hand and say, "Karlie, you are beautiful."  She said that this helped affirm her internal and external beauty...

...That's great for a six foot three super model who has been walking for Oscar since she was fifteen.  Why is it that when Karlie Kloss gets her hand held and told by one of the most famed women's designers that she is beautiful that the entire world goes, 'awwww,' and feels for her struggle?

What about the girl who belongs to the 99% of the world who cuts herself and never eats because she's too fat?  Wouldn't things be wonderfully different for her if instead of pandering to his models Mr. De la Renta had taken her hand and told her she was beautiful.  Why can't her life be just as beautiful.

I am not trying to demean models since I am currently trying very hard to make it as one, though I would prefer to work for alternative brands than mainstream couture.  I would just like us to take a moment and mentally take some young girl's hand and tell her that she is beautiful, because she deserves it just as much, if not more than a model whose existence revolves around her beauty being reaffirmed every single day.

This was me for more than half of my life.  Don't condone it and help those who deserve better.

It is important to remember that among the famous, beautiful people in the world there are those who struggle each and every day because of what society tells them.  These problems are real and maybe we can take a moment to help someone who really needs to be told they are beautiful instead of worshiping people who already know it.

You are beautiful and you don't need a famous designer to tell you so.  If you have no one else then take your own hand and say it over and over again because it is true.  Do not forget, you are you for a reason.

Makeup Junkie (Confessions)

Hello lovlies,

As you all already know I have a love which borders on obsession for all things beautiful, which most definitely include makeup.  As a result I have become a massive makeup hoarder over the years and continue to collect all sorts of gorgeous, palettes, blushes, lipsticks and more, creating a dragon-like nest.

Since breaking into the social media world on Facebook, Instagram, Deviantart and the like I have wanted to share my passion with like minded people.  Unfortunately, I do not yet Youtube which seems to be the largest way to get yourself out there.  For the moment I must satisfy myself with Instagraming pictures and talking here.

So, her is a collective haul of some of the key items that I have purchased or received over the past six months.  I will be posting reviews on some of the newer items soon, such as the Urban Decay Vice 3 palette and Naked on the go.  I hope you enjoy.

Shimmering Naked Dolly, Shimmering Spice Spice Baby, Shimmering Marshmallow Bunny

To start off, one of my FAVORITE things to get is new lipstick.  I have way too many than any normal girl should have.  But, that goes without saying for my whole collection.  These three are the Two Faced Under the Mistletoe holiday collection and are simply gorgeous.  They are pigmented, moisturizing and chock full of Christmas sparkle.

Lollipop, Juicy Melons, So Berry Sexy

On the subject of Two Faced, these are three of my favorite lipsticks from them.  I've had them for awhile now, and am still in love.  The colors are fantastic and go one smooth as butter.  Plus, the names are adorable.

Let Them Eat Cake, Stella!

These products were a major splurge for me quite some time ago.  I adore these lipsticks for their quality, luxe packaging and unbeatable color.  If anyone is looking for a dupe of Mac's discontinued Cyber, try out Lipstick Queen's Stella!  It is almost a complete match.

Dollface, Tipsy, Captivating, Flush

I am a bad, bad, bad, blush buyer.  I purchase them like I would eye-shadows; based on if I like the color and not really caring about my skin tone.  So far I've only had a few bad mishaps with a wrong tone, and I'm glad to say that these Tarte beauties are not one of them.  I cannot get enough of these blushes.  The color is gorgeous, plus they are all natural and go on without looking cakey.

Peach Beach

(Bows head in shame).  Another blush and another Too Faced product.  I must say that if you were to purchase just one high end blush your entire life, it would have to be this one.  First off, the packaging is ADORABLE and the product is amazing.  It lends you color, highlight and shimmer all in one magical sweep which sends me off to a tropical island somewhere.

Milk Chocolate Soleil, Sun Bunny, Snow Bunny)

Bronzers are something that I have been slowly trying to get into because in the Summer I tend to get rather tan due to my genetic heritage.(Yay for being Jewish!) I was skeptical at first, because when I though bronzers I got pictures of Jersey Shore in my head.  I did not want to get my Snooky on.  I was told to try Too Faced ones and ever since picking up my first(not shown) I have been slowly collecting them all.  They are amazing and anything with the word chocolate in it ACTUALLY smells like chocolate.  (Shut up and take my money!)

And finally, we come to the palettes.  Some new and some old and trusted.  I am definitely addicted to palettes.  Honestly, I used to think they were stupid because they took up so much space, and now I gravitate towards them like it's heroin.  The Too Faced Cat Eyes palette is one of the greats.  Perfect for beginners and full fledged junkies.  You can wet the three darker shades and use as eye liners.

Beauty Wishes & Sweet Kisses

Basically, if it's made by Too Faced I want it.  Their products make me feel like the girly girl I am inside.  I just feel like a princess.  This is their holiday special (small) palette and has gorgeous packaging.  Plus, the price cannot be beat.  Mine was a gift but it was less than twenty, which is a crazy steal.

Naked 2 Basics
If anyone knows me they are aware that I am a huge fan of Urban Decay's Naked line.  This collection really brought neutrals to light for me.  Their Naked Basic palettes are the best for on the go and contouring.  They are sleek, small and easy to travel with.  I cannot wait for the third one.  Bring me that rose gold!

Naked On The Run

Speaking of Urban Decay Naked, the newest kid on the block is this travel palette, which comes with a brand new gloss, eye liner and some of their most coveted shades, along with a classic bronzer/blush duo.  I did not intend on picking this up, but was gifted it by an Instagram fan I ran into at Sephora.  If you don't own any of the Naked palettes, this would be a great start, since you get the best of everything.

One The Rocks

If any of you remember my November favorite blog, you will recall the Smashbox On The Rocks palette that I absolutely adored for the holidays.  Well, they decided to up the ante and also come up with a palette that has three times the amount of shadows and are all just as fabulous as the first.  Plus it's only like six dollars more!  Who wouldn't want that?!

Shadow Box

Urban Decay is always coming out with new and wonderful ways to take either my money or my friend's money away from us.  This was one of them.  Although I adore Urban Decay they have been on a huge Naked kick and we were all glad when something colorful popped up.  This miniature palette is an Ulta exclusive and well worth being picked up.

Vice 3

And FINALLY, my ultimate Christmas present from the best friend in the whole wide world.  The magnitude of this eye shadow collection cannot be comprehended by my picture here.  It is the size of an ipad and has twenty brand new super saturated shades.  Plus it comes with an amazing slipcase and I cannot describe the packaging.  Ladies and gentlemen I present to you the Vice Three palette.  It is insanely expensive at, sixty dollars a pop, but well worth it since it is limited edition and when they're gone that's it.  This is my new baby and I love it.

Well, there it is, all of my not so guilty pleasures.  I love makeup and am already looking forward to some of the 2015 releases.  Please stay tuned for reviews and swatches of the Vice 3 palette, Shadow Box and One The Rocks.  See you there.

Concerning Outfits (Being You)

Hello lovlies,

As a somewhat obsessed fashion person who is concerned about expressing herself and looking good as often as I can, (Runs to the doctor and dentist in sweats totally don't count.) I find myself faced with having to take the things I purchase or receive and turning them into outward expressions of myself.

This can be a bit tricky, because often times people get caught up in the 'idea' of what we are 'supposed' to look like rather than dressing the way our inner heart desires.  For example, back in the day I tried so hard to be 'preppy' because it was in style and several of my current friends sported the look.  But I just couldn't get it to stick and eventually traded in my Sperry Topsiders for Combat boots and felt much more in my own skin.

And that's the amazing thing about clothes; they can transform you from day to day depending on who you want to be.  "Dress how you feel," was said in one of my issues of Glamour and I couldn't agree more.  There will be things that you gravitate towards, but never be afraid to occasionally jump out of your comfort zone, because fashion is meant to be fun.  It's playing dress up for adults.

It is also a terrible myth to think that in order to create a killer outfit you need to spend hundreds of dollars and have all new clothes.  That is definitely wrong thinking and some of the best shopping I have done has been in the far reaches of my closet.

For example, the look above was created using only two new items; the skirt and bag.  I'd had the shirt for almost a year and the shoes for even longer.  But it came out great and I actually went to get my picture taken with Santa Clause looking like this.  (Don't judge.)

Another great thing about shopping your wardrobe to create outfits is that you find things that happen to be in this season that you've already owned all along.  For the Fall 2014 Runway shows, chunky turtlenecks were huge and I didn't even have to buy anything since this beauty was already there, allowing me to create the trend I loved without spending a dime.

Also, as a person creates looks they should realize that it is perfectly alright to dress a certain way one day and totally different the next.  Dressing the same may seem as if you are creating a persona for yourself, but really it seems monotone.  The key is to dress 'similar' rather than the 'same.'  All of my outfits have an element of me in them and when my friends see me they agree that it is a very 'Nana' look.

One joy that comes from creating outfits is being able to combine high end and lower end items together to create a unique look that is totally you.  This twin set came from Peebles and cost lest than thirty dollars when I purchased it.  The bag is Betsey Johnson and the heels are Guess, more expensive designer items that I picked up at Ross.  Don't be afraid to mix and match.

Also, thrift is key to some really successful looks.  It's one thing to buy the outfit right off the mannequin because it looks so good,(no shame; I've done it.) and another to piece together something of your very own.  Everything in the outfit above except the shoes and necklace was found at either a thrift or consignment shop and purchased separately from one another.  Putting them together made a great holiday party look.

Have fun!  Some people are intimidated by stepping outside of their circle and try something completely new.  My motto is that, 'you never know.'  Don't trust sizes or what looks good on the size -0 model; see for yourself.  You might find that an insane blue bubble skirt is your thing.

I adore having fun with different textures.  They add another dimension to your outfit.  Pairing something soft like this H&M jacket with something leather creates a unique juxtaposition which creates visual interest.  And it also means you don't have to wear all cotton at once.  Put fur and Lycra together, or sequins and feathers; it's all out there for you to try.

Be inspired by everything.  I dress according to the way I feel every day and this is dictated by many things including, music, my friends, magazines, and all other manner of things that influence my life.  I allow my interests to show through my clothes.  I love lipstick, diamonds and rock and roll.  Not too keen on the champagne bit.  And I love Betsey Johnson who designed the shirt.  Don't be afraid to let yourself shine.

Buy outfits for the girl ow woman you are.  Not for the one yesterday, last year, or tomorrow; she can buy her own clothes.  Love who you are and live within the moment.  You are beautiful so let whatever flag you want to fly.

Personally, I'm gonna let my freak flag fly because that's who I am.  And why I'm gonna wear the outfit above with my hair below.  No other reason why besides the fact that I can and I love being me.  I hope that you love you too.

How To Afford An Expensive Style (Installment one; Gothic/Lolita)

Hello Lovlies,

As a fashion entrepreneur I find myself inspired by many different things.  I read my magazines, flipping through the glossy pages with great anticipation while looking for items that speak to me.  However, it isn't just America or Britain that I am influenced by.  Probably the strongest influence that I have comes from Japan and its amazing innovative street stylers who seem to live according to the whims of their fantastic dress code which is a strand of unique dna from one person to another.

There are hundreds of Japanese subcultures of fashion, ranging from the extremely bright Decora, to more subdued Miori Girls and the ever growing lolita culture which spreads every day.  Ever since getting into anime and Japanese music I have loved their free spirit when it comes to dressing and have been attracted to several extreme styles which include gothic lolita and Visuel Kei.  Both of these looks are staples in the Japanese fashion underground.  The clothes become less of a costume and more an outward expression of what we feel inside and what we want people to see.

Decora style on the Harajuku strip
I draw a lot of inspiration from so many styles that I sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to consider myself one particular look.  I know that in my inner most heart I am a grunge loving, punk inspired, lolita who loves bows and studs.  Those are what I gravitate towards the most.  I would love to get to walk in Harajuku Japan and shop the adorable little boutiques where I can feel accepted for who and what I am.

Visual Kei band
But, with coveted style comes the calamity of overpriced merchandise.  As a gothic person at heart I have experienced the difficulty of having to find the things I love for a price that did not make the purchase unjustifiable.  I adore the look and lifestyle, but without having to pay their astronomical prices.  Ut seems that being true to you is costing more and more with each passing day.  So, my lovlies, what I would like to talk about today is looking beyond brand blinding and finding and affording being who you want.

Outfit of the day; lolita style!
Today I will focus on the subcultures of gothic and lolita fashion that I adore.  Looking dark and cute really has been one of my fashion aspirations for many years, and even as a twenty five year old adult, I am still drawn towards bows and spikes as my go to look.  So I will be breaking down key elements and how to afford them.

(Shoes; Our Best Foot First)

A major staple of both gothic and lolita fashion are platforms.  These shoes are especially popular among many striving fashionistas in Japan and almost everyone on the Harajuku strip wear them.  However, one of the most in demand brands is the European retailer, Demonia.  Their assortment of Creepers, Mary Janes and sky high boots range in price from fifty to several hundred dollars; a price many of us can't afford to pay.  But, with patience on our side we will prevail.  Above and below are both pairs of Demonia that cost me less than thirty for both.  Instead of giving in and purchasing the two hundred dollar jobs I bided my time and snagged them at my local goodwill.

This pair is still on their site for a hundred and eighty pounds and I purchased them for a grand total of five dollars.  It may take time to look your best, but it's worth the wait.

A cult fave in gothic fashion is the coveted Dr. Marten boot.  These boots come in every type of styles, from the classic slicked vinyl to purple glitter and flowers.  These were purchased at an outlet shoe store for thirty dollars, knocking a hundred and twenty off the list price.

(Tops; Search and be Found)

I have noticed that with certain styles, especially those that divert from the mainstream society, people become locked into the idea that in order for them to achieve their desired look they must only shop at certain retailers.  For example, emo people tend to lean rather heavily on Hot Topic and Spencer's for their skinny jeans, band tees, bright belts and beanies, paying large amounts because of where the item was purchased.  I am not against liking one particular store, but when it comes to saving money, you need to have an open mind and willingness to explore other places.  They might have what your looking for, but cheaper.

I found this frilly blouse at my local goodwill.  I was attracted to it's ruffled collar and the fact that it looked like something right out of a Victorian catalog.  The upside was that it only cost me seven dollars.  Also, the brand was J. Crew, a brand that many assume is mainly preppy.  But, wear this with a vest and long black sjirt and no one could tell the difference.

This shirt is a Macy's brand, International Concepts that I picked up at an outlet store for less than ten.  It's lace sleeves and wonderful fit make it perfect for any gothic or lolita ensemble.

This blouse screams gothic and lolita elegance, with its Edwardian like collar, puffed shoulders and adorable details.  This is from the brand Bebe2 that I snagged at a major sale for five dollars.

(Skirts; A Flounce in Time)

Part of what helps set the Japanese lolita style aside from others is their love of volume.  Circle skirts with petticoats and pinafores look darling with thigh highs and those Mary Jane platforms you scored on ebay.  However, part of you wants what every other lolita wants and that is to own every item in the Baby The Stars Shine Bright store.  This is impossible for most normal income people since a single skirt like the one above would run you at least three hundred dollars.  Though finding your desired brand is fun, finding just as good alternatives can be just as amazing.  Above and below are two skirts from Hot Topic that I picked up for around twenty five for both.  They look just as good and have the exact same feel.

The skirt below is my ultimate favorite lolita find because it looks EXACTLY like something that Baby The Stars Shine Bright would create, but it cost me eight dollars instead of three hundred.

The skirt below is a great example of finding clothes that work for your style in unlikely places.  I found this adorable bow circle skirt at Peebles and it is from the off shoot Tommy Hilfiger line, Tommy girls.  I found an appropriately gothic and lolita item from a preppy band in a store I randomly walked into.

(Accessories; A Little Black Frosting)

Both gothic and lolita people are often judged by the bags they carry.  Many of these include the famed Bat wing or angel wing backpacks, and other bags created by high end designers.  The trick here is realizing that there are options everywhere.  One of my favorite lolita bags is the one above and is from the brand Love Moschino that I purchased at a consignment shop for thirty dollars, two hundred dollars less than its original price.  It works wonderfully because of the cue mansion and all the details, like hears and chandeliers in the window, making it an an interesting piece altogether.

Above are two bags, both appropriate fro gothic and lolita ensembles.  The one on the left was a steal from H&M for twelve dollars and the left, Betseyville by Betsey Johnson for twenty dollars from my local Plato's Closet.

This is a Betsey Johnson purse that I wanted because of the absolutely adorable bow details, but wasn't willing to shell out the hundred and thirty for it.  Several months later I found it at Ross for only thirty and rejoiced in adding it to my gothic collection.

Another important thing that I must stress is looking for things in interesting places.  Although the beanie looks like a Hot Topic special, I actually got this from a passing Halloween store and got it for seven dollars!

Head wear is important to both of these styles and comes with the problem that hats are often very expensive.  But, if you keep your eyes peeled you can land great finds from Goodwill(Right) and H&M(Left).  Although the H&M hat was a little pricey ($20.00) I purchased it because it was so diverse.

To a goth and lolita, perhaps one of the most important elements of our style is stockings.  Leg wear is by no means cheap, especially if you want Baby The Stars Shine Bright or Angelic Pretty or Sexpot Revenge embroidered on the sides.($50.00)  These thigh highs were a rejoice filled find at Walmart fro five dollars.  My first pair cost thirty.  Never again.

And finally, jewelry, perhaps one of the funnest ways to express yourself.  Though some of the items shown are more expensive(Jack choker, $30.00) there are pieces that do just as well for an astounding price.  Both the bat necklace and ring cost only three dollars apiece and were from the same Halloween shop I got my Jack beanie at.  Although you could buy more expensive version from Kiki Kannibal, those would run you seventy, and I think three dollars is pretty sweet.  Also, both rosaries are from Walmart(Mind Blown) and cost one five dollars each.

Remember that being true to you should be a fun adventure filled with exciting finds and wonderful savings.  Be who you want to be, but don't be in debt for it, because that's never fun.

I hope you enjoyed this and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Be True To You!
